Uber: The stats on app's use in Leeds as it marks second birthday

Uber has revealed a huge surge in the taxi app's popularity since launching in Leeds two years ago.

November marks the second anniversary of the ride-hailing app’s arrival in the city, and in 2016 more than three million trips were booked by local Uber users.

Licensed private hire drivers in Leeds have clocked up more than eight million miles transporting Uber customers - the equivalent of circling the equator 300 times.

The app’s success has seen the average waiting time for a car in Leeds drop to just three minutes, while visitors to the city who have booked a ride hailed from 70 different countries.

Following the Leeds launch in 2014, the company spent 2015 expanding to Wakefield, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Bradford, Sheffield and Rotherham. This autumn, York and Halifax went online for the first time.

Uber Leeds general manager Neil McGonigle said: “This year has been a fantastic year of growth for Uber in Leeds and across Yorkshire. In the past 12 months we have seen tens of thousands of new people use the app to book a safe and affordable ride at the touch of a button.

“We’re excited about the year ahead and working together with the hundreds of professional drivers who use the app to give more people a reliable option to get from A to B.”

Uber is now present in 20 UK towns and cities.
