TV chef bowled over at Leeds student hospitality

Hospitality students served up a treat to Yorkshire's own celebrity chef James Martin.

The TV caterer was in Leeds to give a warm welcome to visitors to the new 21m Carnegie Pavilion.

This 36,000 sq ft futuristic multi-purpose building is a dramatic addition to the Headingley skyline.

It has been developed jointly by Leeds Met and Yorkshire County Cricket Club and operates as a cricket pavilion and media centre in summer and a teaching facility during the academic year.

Malton-born James enthused his audience with a talk about his passion for hospitality in Yorkshire – and then tucked into food and drink with a Yorkshire theme.

He said: "The facilities are fantastic at the Pavilion. I have never seen anything like it. Practical experience is very important in my industry and the guys have been cooking some great stuff."

Students doing hospitality, tourism, events management and retailing courses took part in special challenges with a Yorkshire theme. Prizes were then presented to them by Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire.

Events management students led tours of the pavilion, pointing out the media centre, players' changing and treatment rooms, spectator seating, premium hospitality suites and associated facilities.

James, 38, started his culinary career helping his father in the kitchen at Castle Howard and he began appearing on television in 1996, later reaching a large audience on the BBC's Ready Steady Cook.

The Carnegie Pavilion was oficially opened in the summer by HRH the Duke of Gloucester and its teaching use began in September.

Its conferencing facilities provide 14 events spaces with a capacity for 150 delegates.

Leeds Met's director of estates Sue Holmes said: "The pavilion is the first of its kind – a real dual-use building giving university students and sporting professionals access to shared space."

Leeds Met is home to the UK Centre for Coaching Excellence for sport and disability sport.
