Karl Burke’s filly will head for the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes on a high after she excelled in Saturday’s 32Red Sprint Cup on Merseyside.

After having previously finished second in the July Cup at Newmarket, Burke is keen to remain over six furlongs with Royal Ascot winner Quiet Reflection, who stays in training next season and could even embark upon an international sprint campaign. The North Yorkshire handler said: “She was due a rest after Newmarket – she was always a filly that needed time and was strengthening.

“We knew she had improved in her work leading up to (Saturday).

“When it rained and got soft, bordering on heavy, you are always wondering if a three-year-old sprinter with that turn of foot could get bogged down – she handled it brilliantly.

“I didn’t even enter in the (five-furlong) Prix de l’Abbaye (Chantilly) because I didn’t want to get side-tracked. She’s confirmed now she’s definitely a six-furlong filly. I always had it in my mind to stick to six (furlongs) as she got stronger. Barring accidents, she will head to Champions Day.

“She’ll have an entry in this year’s mares’ sale at Tattersalls in December, just in case something untoward happens, but the plan is to stay in training next year.”

l Ben Curtis faces three weeks on the sidelines with a wrist injury after a fall at Thirsk on Saturday.

Curtis was unshipped when the William Haggas-trained In The City suffered a fatal injury two furlongs from home in a one-mile handicap.

The jockey has undergone surgery on a dislocated wrist but is not expected to be out of action for too long.

Curtis rides principally for Brian Ellison, who said: “He’s lucky, in a way, as it looked worse than it was.”
