Tunisia 1 England 2: Are you among the fans at Leeds's Millennium Square?

Thousands gathered at a stadium in Volgograd in Russia to watch the Three Lions team beat Tunisia in their opening group match last night.

But even those not lucky enough to be in Russia made it a fun occasion by gathering in pubs, clubs, beer gardens and squares in Leeds. Big crowds gathered in Millennium Square and at bars throughout the city and cheered as Harry Kane scored a late winner to seal a 2-1 triumph.

Before the match England football fans have laid a wreath in memory of Soviet war dead in a moving ceremony in central Volgograd. Two fans, James Lockett and Billy Grant, were among an official party who paid tribute in the city’s Hall of Military Glory, in the heart of the Mamayev Kurgan memorial park commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad.

The group also included British deputy ambassador Lindsay Skoll and FA chairman Greg Clarke.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate pointed to the “perspective” the war-ravaged history of Volgograd, which was formerly known as Stalingrad, had given his team ahead of the World Cup opener.

And more than a dozen England fans turned out to watch the ceremony, which began with a short display by the Russian soldiers who guard the site.
