Triple whammy for Leeds's very own grand designs

Good design has no boundaries and its inclusivity is reflected in the diverse collection of buildings shortlisted for Yorkshire's most prestigious architecture awards.

The Royal Institute of British Architects has chosen a dozen outstanding projects to be considered for the 2016 RIBA Yorkshire Awards, including a recycling centre, a factory, a monastery, an art gallery, two university libraries and two houses.

There are three buildings in Leeds on the shortlist. They include the Leeds College of Building, Hunslet Campus phase one by Fuse Studios; Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility by TSP Architects and the Laidlaw Library at Leeds University, designed by ADP architects.

The Laidlaw Library utilises contemporary materials and technology in response to its historic context.

It sits between two grade II listed churches and adjacent to the grade I listed Parkinson Building.

Leeds College of Building, Hunslet Campus by Fuse Studios,includes a saw-tooth roof over the workshop spaces to reflect the industrial heritage of the surrounding area.

Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility by TSP Architects features a pre-fabricated, arched timber frame. It is the largest structure of its type in Europe.

Other projects shortlisted are the AMRC Factory 2050, Sheffield; Brynmor Jones Library at Hull University; Stanbrook Abbey, Wass; a house extension in Harrogate;The Diamond, Sheffield; The Hiscox Building, York; Humberston Park Special School, Grimsby; New House, Brigsley, and York Art Gallery.

The winners of the RIBA Yorkshire Awards will be announced at a ceremony on April 21 at Aspire in Leeds.
