THE FIRST Direct Arena, Leeds College of Music and a treehouse suspended from a woodland canopy at Bowcliffe Hall, Bramham, are among those hotlisted for a prestigious award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Each will be assessed by a panel of judges ahead of the 2015 RIBA Yorkshire Award announcement on April 23.

In total, 11 Yorkshire projects have been shortlisted, including the reworking of Sheffield Cathedral and the new John Lewis store in York.

Regional Director of RIBA Yorkshire, Emma England, said the list of projects was “particularly diverse” in terms of budget, building type and locations.

The Arena, designed by Populous, was highlighted for its sustainability, while the College of Music was said to have a “strong visual identity”. The Blackburn Wing, an airfoil-shaped treehouse, celebrates the aviation pioneer Robert Blackburn.
