This is Yorkshire's - and the country's - most cancelled train service

Figures revealed today show the 7.13am service from Harrogate to Leeds is Northern's most cancelled train service - and the highest among every other train operator in the country.

An investigation by The Sunday Times, using data provided by ontimetrains.co.uk, revealed the service had been cancelled 28 times between December 15, when the new timetable was introduced, and February 22.

That meant it failed to run on more than half off the 55 days in that period. Northern cancelled more than 5,700 services in that period, the figures show.

The most cancelled train for TransPennine Express was the 20.12 service from Liverpool Lime Street to Preston, which was axed 19 times out of 47.

Northern said it was working on "ambitious improvements", while the man who has been charged with raising its standards after it was taken into public ownership has said he will focus on raising the morale of staff in a bid to improve services.

He told The Yorkshire Post: "These people are doing very tough jobs, they need our support and they need to be looked after."

Meanwhile, TPE has also been told to improve by the Government, and managing director Leo Goodwin said: "Our performance was not up to scratch at the end of last year and for this we really do apologise."
