Why new Leeds city centre bus and cycle lane is just tip of the iceberg - YEP comment

The finishing touches have now been made on a project to improve transport infrastructure on a notoriously busy street in Leeds city centre.

The works on York Street - as part of the final phase of the city’s Cycle Superhighway scheme - have seen the creation of a new bus lane and a dedicated, segregated cycling route.

It comes after the YEP last month, through our Unlock the Gridlock campaign, called on transport bosses to help cyclists in Leeds feel safer by giving them more space on the road.The latest project is a real victory for city leaders and has made a busy street, which sees more than 50 buses an hour pass along it, now something to be proud of.

The changes made are admirable but only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to truly unlocking the gridlock in Leeds.

While there’s undoubtedly much more work to be done with regards to transport infrastructure, these small steps go a long way.
