Veterans form protest in Leeds city centre over Troubles investigations

Veterans and supporters from the British Veteran group faced the rain to form a picket line on Whitehall Road, travelling in from across West Yorkshire.

The group are protesting against investigations into the Troubles, with a small number of those who served in Northern Ireland facing legal action over alleged wrongdoing.

One future trial involves the shooting dead of two people on Bloody Sunday in Londonderry in January 1972.

Others surround the killing in separate incidents of Aidan McAnespie, John Pat Cunningham, Joe McCann and Daniel Hegarty.

Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has said that of more than 30 legacy cases it has taken decisions on since 2012, around half related to republicans, and the rest to loyalists and the Army.

The protesters in Leeds joined various veteran and supporters groups across the country, with several protests in cities including London, Birmingham, Swansea, Manchester, York and Edinburgh.

A spokesman for the group said that larger protests are planed for Good Friday, April 10.
