The 'essential aerial patrols' often involve safely hovering in the sky to gain detailed imagery, National Grid said.

The work was to continue to 'keep the network healthy and reliable for customers'.

In a statement, the spokeswoman said: "The essential aerial patrols can involve safely hovering for a few minutes to gain detailed digital imagery so we can continue to keep the network healthy and reliable for customers."
