Man dies after car plunges into reservoir near Halifax

DIVERS have recovered the body of a driver whose car plunged into a reservoir near Halifax on Sunday evening.

A large scale operation involving the emergency services has seen them close a road in Rishworth as they recovert he driver and his car.#

Police closed Oldham Road near the Turnpike Public House following reports that a vehicle had left the road and entered the Booth Wood Reservoir around 8.20pm.

Officers attended supported by the police helicopter and the Fire and Ambulance services.

It is believed that the driver was the sole occupant of the red car which travelling west bound along Oldham Road towards Rishworth, before it left the carriageway.

The driver is believed to be a local man in his thirties.

His family have been informed. 

Road closures are in place from Junction 22 of the M62 to the turning circle at Rishworth School.

It is anticipated the closures will remain in place throughout Monday, with the public being advised to seek alternative routes.

Sergeant Aaron Gudgeon said: “The road remains closed to allow specialist teams to conduct their inquiries and to recover the vehicle and we thank the public for their understanding and co-operation.

“I would appeal to anyone who was travelling in and around Rishworth on Sunday evening and who may have any information about the incident to come forward to police via 101.

“Inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of what took place.”
