A man has died after being hit by a bus near Leeds bus station.

The 49-year-old pedestrian was knocked down by a single decker on Duke Street on Sunday night.

Police said the bus was turning right from York Street into Duke Street in the direction of Crown Point at about 11pm when the incident happened.

Martijn Gilbert, Business Director for Yorkshire Tiger, the company that operates the bus involved, said: “We can confirm that late last night one of our buses was involved in an incident in Leeds city centre.

“Regrettably we have been informed this morning that the pedestrian involved has sadly died. At this point we don’t have any further information, we are working closely with the police to help them understand exactly what happened. Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

Sgt Carl Quinn, of the West Yorkshire Police major collision enquiry team, appealed for witnesses to call 101.
