Major changes to buses in Leeds city centre as the Headrow opens to traffic in both directions

Buses will be able to return to serve the major street in both directions from Sunday.

It means that the temporary bus stops on Calverley Street, Great George Street and Merrion Street will be removed and bus services will return to bus stops on the Headrow and Albion Street.

Other bus services that have run via Boar Lane since September 2019 will run again into the city centre along the Headrow.

The altered routes have been in place for more than a year.

The reopening of the road to traffic in both directions marks a milestone in Leeds City Council's £30m overhaul of the busy route.

The scheme, part of the Connecting Leeds programme, takes in the Headrow, as well as other areas such as Cookridge Street, Calverley Street and Dortmund Square.

The council claims the improvements – which include bus priority measures, safer cycleways and wider pavements – will transform the city centre’s roads into “world-class gateways”.

It is hoped the project will be completed by Spring 2021.

It is hoped that reducing the number of cars in the city centre will help buses to be more reliable, and encourage more people on to public transport as it becomes a more efficient way of getting in and out of the city.
