Calls for more local control over Test and Trace

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has called for councils to be given more control over Test and Trace in order to reduce the number of Covid-19 infections in the region.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s PM programme, he said: “We don’t want these regulations in place for the long-term.

“We’ve got to plan an exit strategy and we’ve got to move from blanket regulations, which are a blunt instrument that affect everybody, to a much more sophisticated, targeted approach – door-to-door teams doing the testing and the tracing.”

Leeds ‘bubbling under’ coronavirus watchlist as infection rate rises

Leeds’s top civil servant has warned the city is “bubbling under” the national Covid-19 watch list.

Leeds City Council chief executive Tom Riordan claimed he did not believe the city was yet at a stage where it would have to consider introducing local lockdown measures, such as those seen in Kirklees, Bradford and Calderdale in recent weeks, but warned the case rate in the city was rising.

He said: “Our testing rates are very high now, which is good because that is what we have to do to keep on top of things.

“Our case rate is now in the mid-20s, so it is 25 or 26 on our seven-day daily rate.

"We are on the radar of the national gold meeting, but we are not yet at a stage where we are likely to require movement restrictions, in our view, as our neighbouring councils have had to do.”

The latest figures for Leeds have been released and show the infection rate is rising.

Leeds had an infection rate of 31.4 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 29. That’s 249 new cases.
