Leeds man dies in car smash with pillar

A MAN was killed in a car crash in Leeds in the early hours of this morning.

Police and fire crews were called to Roundhay Road at around 12.20am.

The fatal smash involved a Toyota Yaris, which was travelling towards Leeds.

As the car approached Gledhow Valley Road with a Nissan Micra, the Toyota lost control and collided with a traffic light pillar.

The car ended up on its roof and the 21-year-old male driver from Leeds was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters.

The driver was then taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

The 23-year-old driver of the Micra was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in police custody.

Fire crews from Gipton and Moortown attended the scene.
