Leeds Bradford Airport to cut a quarter of its workforce as more than 100 jobs set to go

Workers on temporary and zero-hour contracts who work mostly during the summer, as well as some other roles, are most at risk.

A total of 102 jobs are set to go - 23 per cent of the workforce.

The cuts will not affect the airport's proposals for a new terminal building, it has been confirmed

Footfall at the Yeadon airport is still well below normal levels for the time of year, despite more flights taking off as lockdown eases.

When the outbreak shut down large sections of the UK economy in March, an LBA spokesman said there were no plans for job cuts.

Many employees, including those on zero-hour and temporary contracts, were furloughed on full pay for several months

But in a statement, the airport said the impact on the business meant "difficult decisions" had to be made after putting off taking action for "as long as we could".

An application to build a new £150m terminal is due to be heard by a planning panel at Leeds City Council.

A spokesman for LBA said: “We are deeply saddened to be consulting with colleagues as a result of the impact of the global pandemic.

"We, like many other sectors, are operating in challenging circumstances and this has led to some difficult decisions.

"The long-term prognosis for aviation is very different to the short-term constraints our business faces and we remain committed to ensuring we have the right offer for passengers when the time comes through our replacement terminal scheme.”
