Hemsworth: Arrest after death of pedestrian hit by car

A man died after he was hit by a car near a pub.

The 52-year-old was crossing the road near the George and Dragon, on Wakefield Road in Hemsworth, when he was involved in a collision with a silver Skoda Octavia that was travelling towards Hemsworth at about 6.20pm on Saturday.

Despite treatment, he died at the scene. The road was closed while investigations were carried out. A 64 year-old-man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

West Yorkshire Police’s major collision enquiry team are appealing for information. Sergeant Ann Drury said: “I would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or the manner in which the car was being driven beforehand or indeed anyone who saw the pedestrian walking on Wakefield Road before the collision took place.Anyone who has any information should contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.
