Two lanes have been closed on the M1 towards Leeds due to an ongoing police incident.

LATEST: The road is open and police have arrested a 27-year-old man. Full story here.At about 9.30am, Highways England confirmed that there is a lane one and two closure in place.

This is northbound between J39 Durkar to J40 Flushdyke.

They later added that there is 5.7 miles of congestion.

Highways England said: "Please be aware this incident is currently causing approx. 5.7 miles of congestion on the M1 northbound between J38 Woolley and J40 Wakefield adding at least 30 minutes to normal journey times. Please plan ahead if travelling in the area this morning."

The AA reports that there are severe delays of 25 minutes and increasing.

Average speeds are 10 miles per hour.

Stagecoach Yorkshire said that there are delays on their services due to the accident.

The bus company said: "M1 accident between 39-40 junction X10 service delayed."

The crash follows an earlier incident at the same junction when a swan was spotted in lane three of the carriageway.
