IT IS one of York’s most prized shopping streets, with a host of independent traders and restaurants that earned it an accolade as among the best in the country.
And now York City Council is enforcing traffic changes in Fossgate, close to the famous Shambles in the city centre, from Sunday in an attempt to bring in even more visitors.
The changes, which will run for an initial trial period of up to 18 months, include making the street a pedestrian priority zone from 8am to 6pm and reversing the flow of traffic to help reduce the amount of vehicles. Road space will also be allocated for street cafes during certain hours.
The council’s executive member for transport and planning, Coun Ian Gillies, said: “Fossgate has been going from strength to strength and I hope these changes will help to further enhance the street.”
The Google Street View awards in 2010 named Fossgate as Britain’s third best street for food.
