From Sunday, northbound vehicles will be prevented from using Leeds Bridge, which carries traffic over the River Aire at Bridge End, during a 16-month maintenance project.

Leeds City Council said all traffic travelling north, except for the Elland Road Park and Ride, will be diverted during work on the grade II-listed bridge.

The council said in a statement: "A signed diversion will be established via Great Wilson Street, Crown Point Road, Kirkgate and The Calls for all other city-bound motorists.

"While the work is carried out, there will be no disruption to southbound traffic. Two-way access will continue to be provided for cyclists, and access will be maintained throughout for pedestrians.

"The decision has been taken to carry out the work now in order to ensure some continuity and avoiding the bridge needing to be completely closed in the future."

The bridge will be strengthened with steel-reinforced concrete, have ironwork repaired and be repainted during the project.

Leeds Bridge was built in 1873 and was made famous by being the scene of some of the world's first recorded film footage in 1888, when Louis Le Prince filmed traffic travelling across it.
