Traffic was released again by 7am, but Highways England warn that at least six miles of queues have now built up back to the M1 juncton.

Drivers are warned to add at least 45 minutes onto their journey times.

The RPU tweeted a picture of the debris and said: "A1 North J44 to 45.

"Long delays due to vehicle debris and contents across all three lanes.

"Highways England on scene and carriageway being cleared asap."
