Thug attacked man in Leeds city centre bar

Leeds Crown heard Terence Ward, 29, launched a “disgraceful” volley of racial abuse as he sat next to a friends Aliko Mwanbingu, Babley Dey and Harriet Butler in the Back Room Bar on Call Lane in the early hours of Friday, May 1.

Prosecutor, Louise Pryke said Ward threw a glass candle holder at Mr Mwanbingu.

It broke and bounced off a wall, with part of it striking The back of Mr Mwanbingu’s head.

Ward then punched Mr Mwanbingu in the head.

Mr Mwanbingu suffered a cut to his head and was taken to hospital.

Mitigating, Michael Goldwater said Ward is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after being repeatedly stabbed in an attack in Ibiza last August.

Mr Goldwater said: “He says what happened is he suffered a panic attack and completely lost it.

“He is very sorry about that and wishes to say sorry to his victims.”

Ward, of Longton Road, Manchester, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm and racially aggravated threatening behaviour.

Recorder Sophie Drake handed Ward a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years with six-months supervision.

Recorder Drake told him: “Your behaviour was disgraceful and it must have been very threatening and very frightening for those involved.”

Ward must also complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £900 court costs.
