Thousands on their marks as Leeds counts down to 10K
THE STREETS of Leeds will be taken over by runners when the Asda Foundation Leeds 10K gets underway tomorrow.
Thousands are preparing to pull on their trainers to help race organisers Run For All celebrate a special landmark a the YEP-backed event.on Sunday (July 10).
It will be the 10th running of the flagship race which since its launch in 2007 has raised over £4m for good causes across Leeds, Yorkshire and beyond.
the event is part of the lasting legacy of the late inspirational Jane Tomlinson CBE, who founded the charity road race shortly before her untimely death.
Despite having to retire from competitions at the end of 2006, Jane channelled her remaining energies into creating the Leeds 10k Run For All.
The first event was held in June 2007 attracting 8,000 runners and raising more than £500,000 for charities and good causes.
Julie Ward, Senior Manager of the Asda Foundation – supporters of Run For All’s 10K series – said: “Since its launch the Leeds 10K has gone from strength and the 10th run will be extra special.
“I know many Asda colleagues have signed up and are really looking forward to the event. I wish them and everyone else taking part the very best of luck.”
Among those taking part will be former Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield MBE who will be representing the club again as he joins the Run with the Rhinos team, raising funds for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.
He will be joined by model Nell McAndrew, Emmerdale actress Michelle Hardwick, Educating Yorkshire teacher Matthew Burton, Sky Sports presenter Bryn Law and former Leeds Rhinos star Barrie McDermott.
Large crowds will line the route which starts in Vicar Lane from 9.30am and finishes outside Leeds Town Hall.
– A number of roads in Leeds will be closed or have restricted access tomorrow as the city plays host to the Asda Foundation Leeds 10K.
Closures in the city centre will start from 4am.
Roads affected include: Abbey Road, Great George Street, Calverley Street, Cookridge Street, Vicar Lane, Call Lane, Wellington Street, Kirkstall Road, West Street and The Headrow.
