Bracken Edge Primary School came first place in the regional athletic finals and is officially the fastest in Yorkshire thanks to talented young sports stars at their school.

Earlier this week, the young champions successfully defended their place as the unbeaten winners, when they went head-to-head with other schools across the region in the Sportshall Athletics contest, organised by West Yorkshire Sports.

Steve Walker, PE teacher at Bracken Edge Primary said: “The children have been absolutely amazing.

“It is an inner-city school and many of the kids come from a poor background, so the sense of achievement has been absolutely phenomenal.

“More than 27 different languages are spoken at this school, and we have got two indoor athletics teams.

“The children have banded together as a unit and help each other out so it has been an amazing journey. It has helped to inspire a lot of younger kids. Everybody in the playground is chasing batons and throwing javelins. It has been a good all-round success.”

He added: “We are the fastest school in Yorkshire!”

The school has also previously taken part in the North-East Leeds schools and the Leeds City Finals where they once again came first place, after competing against four of the best five schools in the city.

Their rise to the top started in September, where they beat rivals to come first place in the indoor school athletics competition.

Sportshall Athletics is an indoor form of track and field for children between the ages of four and 16. It is the largest competition of its kind, with over a million children taking part nationally.
