Visit it

Escape the bleak January weather with a visit to the Corn Exchange in Leeds.

Magnificently restored in recent years to its former glory. It brings together a restaurant from top chef Anthony Flinn and some top quality retailers.

Leeds Corn Exchange is one of Britain's finest Victorian buildings and a Grade 1 listed structure. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick and completed in 1864, it once again became a major destination after a 1.5m restoration in 2008.

It is now just one of three Corn Exchanges in the country which still operates in its traditional capacity as a centre for trade.

Monty's Manor: Colin Montgomerie And The Ryder Cup

Iain Carter

Monty's Manor gets right inside Colin Montgomerie's Ryder Cup history from his debut in 1991 right up to and including last year's exciting spectacle at Celtic Manor, when Monty captained Europe to win back the Ryder Cup from the grasp of the Americans in a dramatic last day climax.

Author Iain Carter gains unprecedented access to Monty as well as caddies, coaches, rivals, friends and fellow professionals from both sides of the Atlantic, as we get to go back through two decades of successes and near misses.

Readers really get to see the world through the eyes of Monty, one of the most talked about European golfers of his generation.

Carter manages to capture the atmosphere of every tournament brilliantly, particularly the Brookline Ryder Cup in 1999, where Europe lost controversially by one point.

For golf lovers, this book is a must-read. One of Europe's most popular golfers gets the recognition he deserves in this fantastic book.

Get fit

The festivities are over and we are back into a cold new year but don't let the cold weather put you off exercising.

It's easy to curl up in a ball after work, but do your best to stay on track. Exercise will give you more energy and keep you full of beans in a pretty flat part of the year. Late nights and unhealthy food are behind you and now it is time to build up your energy levels, and exercise is key to staying on top of your game.

Doo-Wops & Hooligans

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars burst on to the pop charts last year gaining a double number one whammy with his single Just The Way You Are, as well as with BoB on Nothin' On You.

Before that, we may have been blissfully unaware of the Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter, whose real name is the less memorable Peter Hernandez, but he is responsible for some of the catchiest hits around, having co-written Flo Rida's Right Round, Billionaire with Travie McCoy and Forget You with Cee Lo Green.

Having notched up an impressive seven Grammy nods, Bruno's debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, carries an enormous amount of high expectations. Will it stand up to its fearsome reputation? Fortunately, it does.

Opening with the radio-friendly Grenade, which then leads into the soulful Our First Time and the toe-tapping Runaway Baby, the record never fails to surprise. There are hints of laid-back Hawaiian-style in The Lazy Song, Count On Me and Liquor Store Blues with Damian Marley, and closing track The Other Side, featuring Cee Lo Green and BoB, is just pure pleasure.

Brill or turbot can also be used for this fabulously easy dish. The fish steaks are rubbed with cut lemons, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and baked with fennel wedges and white wine

Serves 4

2 lemons, halved

4 thick halibut cutlets

Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 lemons, thinly sliced

2 tbsp olive oil

2 bulbs of fennel, trimmed and in wedges

12 green olives

2 wineglasses dry white wine

Use halved lemons to rub both sides of each fish cutlet. Place cutlets in a baking tray. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the lemon slices on the fish.

Heat remaining oil in a pan and toss fennel around to sear slightly. Tuck fennel wedges under and around the fish and scatter over olives. Pour over white wine.

Bake in a pre-heated oven Gas 6 / 400F / 200C for around 15 minutes, or until fish and fennel are cooked through. Do not overcook fish. Serve fish on fennel with olives around with cooking liquor spooned over.
