Dedicated fundraiser Amy Andrews, of Cross Gates, raised the impressive sum for Macmillan by banning sweets for a whole month.

The 11-year-old John Smeaton Academy pupil was inspired to fundraise after a family friend was diagnosed with cancer.

Amy said: “I wanted to do something for people who have cancer. Giving up sweets was quite hard because I had to walk past the ice cream van every day after school.”

Amy also took part in tombolas and car boot sales, where she sold her own belongings to boost the total.

Mum Karen Andrews said: “She showed commitment and determination and I’m so proud.”
