Unite Students lodged a formal application with Leeds City Council this week which, if given the go-ahead, will see the re-development of the Podium Buildings on Merrion Way near the firstdirect arena.

It would involve demolition of a pub and casino and the building of two towers that will change the city skyline.

Two linked blocks, one at 15 storeys high and one at 27 storeys, the equivalent to 78 metres high, will house 1020 students.

The existing car parking will be re-worked too so that there will be 90 spaces instead of 120 but 280 cycle spaces will be created.

There will also be a reception and food drink, bars and professional services over almost 1000 square feet.

Unite say that the development will "set a quality benchmark for student accommodation" and gave architects, RIO, a brief to create an environment where students wish to live work and relax.
