Striking design for Tour de France countdown clock revealed

Have your say

With time ticking down in the run up to the Grand Depart, the design for a unique mechanical countdown clock to be positioned in Leeds has been revealed.

The Grand Depart Mechanical Theatre clock, drawn up by theatre designer Barney George, features a giant steel cog with moving mini cyclists of all kinds on its outside.

The intricate design is being made by University of Leeds mechanical engineering students before it goes on display in Trinity Leeds in May. It will chime and shoot confetti cannons to signal the July 5 event.

Leeds City Council’s lead member for leisure Coun Lucinda Yeadon said: “It looks amazing and is sure to be a real head-turner for people to admire as they walk past.” For details visit
