Leeds restaurant bosses sold 250 raffle tickets to customers to raise key cash for local homeless charities.

Customers eating out at Salvo's and Salvo's Cafe and Salumeria on Otley Road, Headingley, took part in a raffle for a giant three litre bottle of Montepulciano D'Abruzzo zaccagini wine and a super-sized bottle of Gradisca blonde beer.

Owner John Dammone's son Leon picked the winning ticket on Christmas Eve that saw Nick Davis of Headingley collect the boozy prize.

The 250 raised will now be donated to the YEP-backed StreetSmart appeal – along with all the other funds collected at the two restaurants since the campaign began on November 1.

Customers dining out at a participating StreetSmart restaurant between November 1 and December 31 are asked to donate 1 per table at the end of their meal.

John said about this year's StreetSmart campaign: "The campaign has been really good.

"We have had a really concerted effort to get support from our customers.

"It's a voluntary contribution but we are really confident we have smashed our record from last year, which would be a real testament to both our staff and customers at a time when purse strings are a bit tight.

"We don't know what the final figure is but we pretty much know that we have already beaten last year's total of 4,000.

"I was rather hoping for 5,000 but I don't think we'll have quite made

Yorkshire's campaign manager Rachel McAlley added: "Everyone involved in StreetSmart have worked really really hard again this year.

"One last push should make this another great fundraising year for Leeds."

In 2009, a record 21,000 was collected in Leeds – more than any other city outside of London, and more than Manchester's and Birmingham's totals combined.

This year, all proceeds will be split between Caring for Life, Simon on the Streets, St George's Crypt, Teen Challenge, RAISE at St Anne's and Create, which all work with the homeless in Leeds.

Participating restaurants are: The Olive Tree in Rodley, Far Headingley and Chapel Allerton; Salvo's and Salvo's Salumeria in Headingley; Casa Mia Grande and Casa Mia Cafe at Chapel Allerton; Fourth Floor Cafe at Harvey Nichols; The Living Room on Greek Street; Casa Mia Millennium and Kendells Bistro, which are all in Leeds city centre, and La Rosa Restaurant & Bar at Pudsey.
