Street robber punched man and demanded cash in attack outside Leeds Briggate McDonald's

A STREET robber who punched a man as he demanded money in an attack outside McDonald's in Leeds city centre has been locked up for 31 months.

Hassan Asghar was handed the sentence after a court heard he has a previous conviction for a robbery in which a victim was threatened with a machete.

Christopher Moran, prosecuting, said the men were sat on a bench eating food they had just bought from McDonald’s.

Asghar and Otene threatened them and demanded money. Security staff from McDonald’s intervened and chased them away.

The pair returned and continued to be aggressive.

They were arrested after being recognised from CCTV footage. Asghar, 19, of Clovelly Place, Beeston, and Otene, 22, of Woodlands Grove, Stanningley, pleaded guilty to two offences of attempted robbery. Mr Moran said the victim who was punched had been left badly shaken and feared future attacks.

Charles Blatchford, for Asghar, said his client accepted that his behaviour was “proper stupid”.

He said Asghar had a job and came from a good family so the offence was not financially motivated.

-> Leeds woman raises alarm over ducks trapped in Roundhay ParkMichael Devlin, for Otene, said his client admitted the offence at an early stage. Otene was given an eight month sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

Recorder Andrew Sutcliffe said: “This is a very serious offence causing a very serious impact on innocent members of the community.”
