Stolen car crashes into wall of Leeds family home UPDATED

The garden wall of a family home in Leeds was destroyed after a car which had allegedly been stolen smashed into it.

Police said the car careered into the wall in Rothwell, coming to rest just inches from toys left in the garden where young children had been playing.

The driver and passenger fled the scene but officers from Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team quickly tracked them down and arrested them.

Now police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident – which happened on Willans Avenue at the junction with Haigh Road over the weekend – to come forward.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police told the YEP: “Officers from Rothwell NPT dealt with an aggravated vehicle taking on Saturday after the car had been taken without the owners consent.

“As can be seen, this car was being driven dangerously, resulting in it crashing into a garden wall at around 10am on Saturday.

“Children’s toys were just at the other side of this wall and it is sheer luck that no children were playing there.

“The driver and passenger then ran off from the scene.

“From enquiries made, both driver and passenger were quickly located at a nearby address and arrested.”

Shocked local residents, who passed by the house and saw the aftermath of the crash, also said it was lucky nobody had been injured.

Andy Warrender said: “I ran past as the car was being towed away and girls were playing in the garden.

“Thank God they were not hurt in the accident.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident or the movements of the car beforehand is being asked to contact Rothwell police station on 0113 397 0640.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
