Masked men armed with metal bars stole cash during a terrifying raid on a Leeds supermarket.

The gang of four men burst into the Morrisons store in the Penny Hill centre in Hunslet at about 10pm yesterday.

They then smashed their way into the supermarket’s tills before escaping in a silver Suzuki Liana.

The car, which had the registration plate NJ52 YUX, was later found partially submerged in river water in the South Accommodation Road area.

All four of the robbers were wearing balaclavas and dark jeans.

Leeds District CID’s Det Insp Marc Bowes said: “This would have been a terrifying experience for staff and shoppers and we are conducting a number of enquiries.”

DI Bowes said specialist scene of crime investigators were today running checks on the Liana.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to ring Leeds District CID on West Yorkshire Police’s 101 number or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
