For the record

The Hyundai Mercury Prize is always one of the highlights of the musical calendar, but with the event open to the public for the first time things will be a little different. While there is no Yorkshire act among the nominees, which include veterans Radiohead as well as Bat For Lashes, we at least have representation on the judging panel with Jarvis Cocker having cast his vote. While the Prize has a tendency to go for the obscure, this year the smart money has to be on the late David Bowie’s swansong Blackstar.

The giant vegetables are back as Harrogate Autumn Flower Show opens its doors later in the week. Expect the usual oversized pumpkins, marrows and onions and sea of more than 5,000 blooms, but this year there will also be a new attraction designed to showcase new green-fingered talent. Green Lane is a row of back gardens which have been designed and planted by those just starting out in horticulture.

Battlelines

The year might have already been awash with political intrigue and controversy, but there will be more to come this week when details of proposed electoral boundary changes are revealed. Despite significant opposition the Government has pressed ahead with plans to reduce the number of constituencies from 650 to 600 an it could mean further bad news for Labour. There are fears amongst the opposition benches that the party will not only lose a number of its seats, but those that are left will be more marginal.

When the Man Booker Prize judges announce the authors shortlisted for one of literature’s biggest prize it may well spark a debate about diversity - or rather lack of it. Only three writers on the 13-strong long list were non-white: Madeleine Thien, Paul Beatty and Ottessa Moshfegh and if none of them make it through to the final stages it could overshadow this year’s competition.

Speed merchants

This week owners of the very British E-type Jag will spend 12 days driving around the country’s coast. However, Yorkshire will play host to a rather less genteel driving experience. The Top Speed Straightliners, which arrives at Elvington this weekend, will feature attempts on the British, European and world land speed record attempts. For And for those who prefer something a little more exciting than a four door estate, vehicles taking part include a jet power hearse, Puma motorbike and jet powered shopping trolley.
