Speakeasy soiree at The Light, Leeds, raises cash for St George's Crypt

On Friday, the centre launched its first Secret Supper Club, which took guests back to the 1920s Prohibition Era, when drinking was done in secret and entertainment was extravagant. The soiree saw diners being directed to an actor playing a 1920s shoeshine to find out the location of the supper club. They enjoyed old fashioned cocktails at Frankie and Benny’s before heading onto Browns for a three-course themed meal, live jazz music and flapper dancers.

The weekend - which was organised to raise funds for The Light’s charity partner St George’s Crypt - continued with a free street party on Saturday to celebrate the Queen turning 90.

Visitors were entertained by a toe-tapping jazz band and a juggling jester, and tucked into a banquet of nibbles, courtesy of Barburitto, Bagel Nash, Frankie & Benny’s and Prezzo. They also enjoyed old fashion lemonade and sweet treats.

Stephanie James, marketing manager at the centre, said: “It was a brilliant weekend of events at The Light. Friday’s Supper Club went down a storm – our guests loved the fact that they were left in suspense right up until the event started.

“On Saturday, we wanted to throw a huge party for Her Majesty’s birthday – in true Leeds style. Visitors enjoyed a host of entertainment and tasty food and drink provided by our tenants. Both events raised £334 in total for our charity partner, St George’s Crypt, and this will help support the vital work they do with the homeless around our city.”

St George’s Crypt is a city centre charity that provides shelter, care and support to homeless people, along with training and engagement programmes to help them rebuild their lives and work towards employability.
