Social enterprise aims to bring more affordable exercise to Leeds

Affordable dance, fitness and wellbeing programmes are being brought to people in Leeds after a social enterprise opened a city office.

Nouveau Wellbeing, which opened at Tenants Hall in Middleton last week, has recruited dance instructor Sophie Simpson to offer classes to people in North and West Yorkshire.

Sessions from chairobics to cookery costing as little as £2 per person are being run at venues including Cockburn High School, the Cardigan Centre, Burley Lodge Centre, and Beeston Village Community Centre.

The social enterprise was founded by County Durham-based Bethany Ainsley, 29, and currently delivers affordable classes across 75 community venues to more than 1,500 residents every week.

Sophie, 33, from Huddersfield, said: “I don’t think there are many opportunities for people who haven’t danced or done exercise in a long time to access something as affordable as this.

“It’s about having fun and making friends; I think people get into a rut and believe they have too much of a mountain to climb to get back into regular exercise.

“But this is not the case; we have classes like chairobics, which is done sitting down and means even where mobility is an issue we can still offer an opportunity.”
