Snappers step in front of camera

A band of photographers who snap some of the city's most interesting places are now starring in an exhibition showcasing Leeds's many faces.

The @igersleeds group regularly comes together on photo sharing site Instagram and organises meet-ups around the city, taking pictures of places and sharing them online.

On his first outing with the group, photographer Martin Musiol took this image which he later entered into the Changing Faces of Leeds exhibition’s public competition.

In his submission, Martin said: “We organise Instameets (photowalks) in interesting places around Leeds. This photo is from my first one, when we ended up in Hope City, Leeds.”

The image was awarded second place in the contest’s group shot category and is now on display at Leeds City Museum.

Praising Martin’s photo, the competition judge said: “Group shots can be especially difficult, getting everyone to coordinate and look exactly correct in one moment. This is done very well and the black and white suits the subject well.”

The Changing Faces of Leeds exhibition’s public competition saw more than 500 photographers submit their best pictures.

The museum team then picked their favourites and put them on show alongside a variety of unique and historic images which depict generations of people who have lived or worked in the city.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “With our bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2023 gathering pace, we’re determined that everyone has the opportunity to feel part of culture in Leeds, and this exhibition typifies that ambition perfectly.”

Changing Faces of Leeds runs until June 5.
