Six men arrested over hit-and-run death of James Gilbey in Leeds

Adnan Ahmed, 29 handed himself in at a police station this afternoon after detectives said they wanted to talk to him following the death of 25-year-old James Gilbey, from Bramley.

Mr Gilbey was crossing Stanningley Bypass after visiting a friend in Kirkstall when he was hit by a VW Golf on Monday night. He died at the scene.

It is believed the occupants initially got out of the car before driving off, but the vehicle was found in Fagley Crescent, Bradford, in the early hours of today following a call from a member of the public.

Ahmed, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, was one of three men who had been named by police following the incident.

The two others – 27-year-old Majid Malik and Kasser Hussain, 22 – are also in custody after handing themselves in at police stations in Wakefield and Bradford respectively.

Mr Gilbey’s family today released a photograph of him as the detective in charge of the investigation appealed again for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Elizabeth Belton, of West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team (HMET), said: “James’ family are completely devastated about his death and we are doing everything we can to provide the answers they need about exactly what happened.

“Specially-trained police family liaison officers are working closely with the family and offering them every support at what is clearly a really difficult time for them.”

As well as Ahmed, Malik and Hussain, police have also arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Two others, aged 25 and 27 and both from Bradford, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the use of an Audi A5 car that was believed to have been travelling in convoy with the Golf at the time of the collision. The Audi was recovered in Bingley.
