Here are six suggestions for the day - Tuesday, February 13 - itself:

GO DUTCH

BLOOM BAKERS, LEEDS

In the Netherlands pancakes are a staple, eaten every other week, filled with cheese, bacon, apples and even beetroot. Thanks to those innovative cooks at Leeds-based Bloom Bakers, you can make your own with this recipe: 2 raw beets, 2 Bramley apples (medium sizes), 150ml water, 3tsp cinnamon, 2tbs honey. Method: dice beets and cut the apples into large wedges and place in pan together with all the water. Bring to boil and simmer 25-30 mins until soft. Mix in cinnamon and honey. Blend if desired. See them at North Leeds Food Festiva, June 30 & July 1, Roundhay Park. Website: www.bloombakers.co.uk

For as long as anyone can remember, Pancake Day in Scarborough has been associated with skipping. Originating from an older tradition known as ‘Ball Day’, a public holiday when apprentices and servants would join one and other to play games on the foreshore - Scarborough’s Skipping Festival has taken place for around 100 years.

The local tradition continues to be as popular as ever and each year on Shrove Tuesday the Foreshore is closed to traffic to allow children and adults alike join in the fun.
