MIDDLETON PARK, LEEDS

Middleton Park is situated four miles from the city centre in urban south Leeds. Of its 630 acres, 200 are ancient woodland and a designated nature reserve.

Middleton Woods Nature Reserve is the largest ancient woodland in Leeds and has been continuously wooded since at least 1600. Oak dominates the mixed woodland which together with streams and ponds, provide a refuge for numerous mammals, birds and amphibians. There are also remains of old coal mining here.

Excellent for walks and golf.

JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL

If you’re quick, you can still enjoy the 34th Jorvik Viking Festival in York, which ends tomorrow.

Recognised as the largest event of its kind in Europe, the annual festival is a city-wide celebration of York’s rich Norse heritage. This year will see events commemorating a seminal moment in British history, the arrival and conquest of England by the Great Viking Army in AD 866.
