Signs are that Leeds mum is now a big achiever...

Sports enthusiast Vicki Gilbert was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right leg at the age of just 19.

After 13 gruelling operations and years of chemotherapy doctors reluctantly conceded that the only remaining course of action was amputation.

After coming to terms with the loss of her leg, she then faced an even bigger shock after being told by doctors she had been misdiagnosed.

But Vicki, who was highly commended at the Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards, started up her own business, ‘Babies Can Sign’, teaching babies and parents to communicate using British sign language.

Her business has now grown to delivering modified classes to primary, and secondary schools, and even a lecture on language at the University of Leeds.

And now the team behind the Yorkshire Evening Post-backed awards are on the search for inspirational women like Vicki to honour at this year’s awards.

Vicki said: “It’s the opportunity for women to be recognised and celebrate their achievements.

“Think about people who know that you really admire – and nominate them.”

Georgina Abbott, senior hospice fundraiser at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, said: “The Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards is the perfect opportunity to nominate an unsung heroine like Vicki.

“We are open now for nominations to recognise and celebrate women in Yorkshire who have achieved something outstanding.”

This year’s Women of Achievement event takes place at New Dock Hall, the Royal Armouries, Leeds, on Friday, May 20. Tickets cost £50 each.
