The 64-year-old man was behind the counter at Cottage Stores off-licence, in Newall Carr Road, when three men walked in at about 8.50pm on Sunday.

One waited at the door while the other two threatened him, before climbing over the counter and attacking him.

The gang stole a large amount of cash along with bottles of spirits and packets of cigarettes before escaping, leaving the victim with bruises to his face and body.

Detective Sergeant Amanda Wimbles, of Leeds CID, said: “This was a frightening experience for the shopkeeper to be attacked and robbed in this way. We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything suspicious in the time leading up to the robbery or who saw the suspects running off.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who is aware of bottles of spirits or cigarettes being offered for sale in suspicious circumstances that could be linked to this incident.”

The robbers were slim and had their faces covered with black material. One was wearing a light-coloured hooded jacket, dark jogging bottoms and white trainers. The others wore dark-coloured tops.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Leeds CID at Elland Road police station via 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
