Headingley garage Alba Tyres took part in a survey which collected data from 2,359 vehicles, and found that 576 of them had typres with a tread depth that was under the legal limit of 1.6mm. A total of 1,760 were under 2mm, the threshold at which mechanics recommend they should be replaced.

The centre is now offering to provide free tyre checks for motorists and has set itself a target of removing 600 illegal tyres from the road during Tyre Safety Month in October.

Manager Peter Lloyd said:

“As an established and trusted local business we feel it’s really important to fully support Tyre Safety Month and take the lead in promoting the importance of tyres and tyre safety to our community.

“It’s unbelievable that so many motorists don’t think about tyres and tyre safety. Driving on illegal tyres is very dangerous because you have significantly less control of your vehicle and the stopping distance is much greater. The tyres are the only part of the car that is in contact with the road surface, which makes them crucial in helping to avoid a collision.

“There needs to be a big change in people’s attitudes. Not only are you risking your own safety, but that of other motorists too. You could also face a fine of up to £2,500 and three points on your licence for each illegal tyre.”

Motorists can check tyre tread depth using a 20p coin. Place the coin into the main groves of each tyre. If you can see the outer edge of the coin, the tread is below the legal limit.

“If you don’t feel confident doing this test yourself, I’m happy to check tyres for free and without any obligation. I would much prefer to check a tyre and send a customer away because it’s ok than have that driver take an unnecessary risk. And if you do need a replacement tyre, we can discuss the options and ensure you don’t spend any more money than is absolutely necessary.”
