Parents, teachers and Wakefield MP Mary Creagh have campaigned for the safety measure to be built on the busy B6129 Wakefield Road outside Flushdyke Junior and Infant School.

Wakefield Council has now told Ms Creagh that work should begin in the summer on the road, near Ossett.

Ms Creagh said: “There’s a great deal of concern among parents that I’ve met, and the teaching staff.

“I’ve seen for myself there’s issues with parents parking but the big issue is around the safety for crossing. It’s a really, really busy road.

“The council have returned to me and said they have done a site inspection and think the crossing is suitable, subject to checking out all the underground works.

“They were talking about doing it this summer. It’s hopeful but not entirely pinned down.”

She added that the estimated £60,000 that could be spent carrying out the crossing would be a lot of money for the council to spend at a time of stringent cuts.

Staff from the school have met several times with road safety committee representatives. Ms Creagh said nearby businesses also supported the measures.
