They're carefully crafted in all shapes and sizes to help keep birds out of crops.

But plans are underway for scarecrows to march into life once again this year, when an annual festival based on the decoys returns.

The Gildersome Scarecrow Festival 2018 will take place on June 25 in the village.

Alongside a host of entertainment, residents are invited to decorate their own entry to compete for judged prizes.

Dozens of people turned out for the popular festival last year.

The event will feature a Scarecrow Trail, as scarecrows are dotted around the village, and visitors will be able to follow the trail using a special map.

There will also be entertainment, including brass band performances, Punch and Judy and miniature steam engine rides. Visit www.gildersomeparishcouncil.co.uk for more information.
