ROLLER derby teams from across the north descended on the city on Saturday as Leeds Roller Dolls hosted its fifth Great Yorkshire Showdown tournament.

Leagues from Halifax, Hull, Furness, Newcastle, Sheffield and the Dolls’ b team, the Whip Its, fought it out in a fierce day of competition designed specifically for ‘b’ teams at Futsal Arena.

The Whip Its, who took home the trophy last year, missed out on a place in the final, which saw Newcastle beat Furness 173 points to 172.

Whip Its skater Emma Kerry, of Kirstall, said: “We had a really close first game, against Hull, where we were beaten by just nine points. We have a really new squad and we were impressed by how everybody pulled together.”

Leeds Roller Dolls’ next event will see both the A and B teams take on Central City Rollergirls at Futsal on October 18.
