Rocking the boat with ode to Rum

Not the worst work perk ever. Legend has it that when the Royal Navy first started '˜rum rationing' it was one pint of rum per sailor per day.

It has no rules or regulations, other than it is made by sugar cane - making it one of the most laid back and diverse spirits.

So, take a tipple and embrace the Carribbean spirit, quite literally, with the Leeds Rum Festival at the Corn Exchange.

Created by two of the city’s best known bartenders, Samantha Fish, operations manager for Mojo and Dan Crowther of The Hedonist Project and Brand Ambassador for Ableforth’s Rum, there will be music, great street food (including Pina Colada waffles) and 80 different types of rum on Saturday and Sunday September 23 and 24.

Brands such as Appleton, Pussers and Wray and Nephew will tempt rum fans old and new and if you prefer it shaken there are cocktail masterclasses too.

Samantha said: “Rum is the most diverse spirit category in the world. The way that it’s made varies hugely from country to country so each has its own distinctive flavour.”

The tradition was abolished in the 1970s over concerns it would lead to safety issues.
