A road in Leeds city centre is set for temporary closure as work continues on the demolition of the former Millgarth Police Station building.

George Street, near Leeds Kirkgate Market, will be shut from 8am to 8pm this Sunday and then from 8pm on Monday to 6am on Tuesday.

The road will be fully accessible to vehicles and pedestrians outside of those times.

Millgarth’s demolition forms part of work on developer Hammerson’s £150m Victoria Gate retail scheme.

Nicholas Fay, Hammerson’s senior project manager, said: “We have tried to minimise disruption in order to safely demolish this building.

“After detailed discussions with [main Victoria Gate contractor] Sir Robert McAlpine and Leeds City Council, these times have been identified as the best practical solution to ensure the health, safety and protection of pedestrians, local businesses and traffic that may otherwise be at risk at this location during the demolition.”
