Revealed: The winner of the YEP's Halloween story-writing competition

Dozens of them put pen to paper when we invited entries for our annual Halloween story-writing competition.

Our budding authors were given the opening paragraphs: “Daisy and Poppy had been excited about Halloween for weeks. But when they set off trick or treating...”

Then it was time to let their imaginations take our two heroines on a terrifying adventure.

Over the past two editions, we have printed a selection of some of our favourite submissions by writers aged 16 and under.

And today we can reveal this year’s winner is Kyra Davy, a 10-year-old pupil at Scholes (Elmet) Primary School.

Her mum, Sarah Davy, said: “Kyra’s been asking all the time whether I thought the judges had read her story yet. She enters competitions all the time. I can’t believe she’s won – it’s amazing!

“She’s does a lot of writing. She’s always doing little short stories and poetry, and she’s very keen on her reading.

“Her favourite author is Jacqueline Wilson, and she’s got all the Harry Potter books and loves David Walliams’ stories. She loves Shakespeare too.”

Yorkshire Evening Post editor Hannah Thaxter said the judges had been thrilled with the standard of entries this year.

She said: “They thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s stories, particularly those from the pupils at St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, Priesthorpe School and West Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre.

“Kyra’s chilling and descriptive piece really stood out We loved her descriptive writing, the way she captured the bond between sisters and the cliffhanger ending. A great piece of storytelling and a worthy winner.”

This year’s story-writing competition was kindly supported by the White Rose Shopping Centre, which donated the prize.

Our winner, Kyra, will receive a £50 gift voucher to spend in their stores.

Sarah, 33, said: “She will be absolutely over the moon. She’ll love spending her voucher as well – she’s a little shopaholic!”
