Revealed: The Leeds roads facing 12-hour closures when the ITU World Triathlon Series comes to the city in June

The full route of the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds will cause the closure of dozens of roads on Sunday June 12.

The race itself will consist of three main elements, which will see the competitors travel through Roundhay, Moortown, Meanwood, Weetwood, Headingley and Woodhouse and parts of the city centre.

The world’s top triathletes will take on a 1,500metre swim before a 42.5km bike ride and finally a 10km run finishing in Millennium Square.

Race organisers have revealed that the scale of the event will mean roads around the route are expected to close and be clear of vehicles on June 12 by 5am at the latest.

Those roads will be closed for a minimum of 12 hours although emergency access for ambulances, health care providers and other agencies will remain.

All affected properties are receiving the first of two letters with early details and guidance from today.

The route street by street

The swim: The first part is a 1.5km swim in Roundhay Park’s Waterloo Lake.

The bike ride: The athletes will transition from the swim to the bike in the car park at Roundhay Park before riding into the city centre via Park Avenue, Princes Avenue, Street Lane, Stonegate Road, Meanwood Road, Grove Lane, Shaw Lane, Otley Road, North Lane, Cardigan Road, Burley Road, Burley Street, West Gate, The Headrow, Calverley Street and Millennium Square. The competitors will then do seven laps of the city centre featuring Cookridge Street, The Headrow, Briggate, Albion Place, Albion Street, The Headrow, Park Row, South Parade, East Parade, The Headrow, Park Square East, St Pauls Street, Park Square West, Westgate, A58, Westgate, The Headrow, Calverley Street and Millennium Square.

The run: After transition two in the square they will do four laps of a city centre course featuring Cookridge Street, The Headrow, Briggate, Albion Place, Albion Street, The Headrow, Park Row, South Parade, East Parade, The Headrow, Park Square East, St Pauls St, Park Square West, Westgate, The Headrow, Calverley Street and Millennium Square.
