Retro gaming fans to battle it out for charity

FANS of Super Mario, Zelda or Sonic the Hedgehog will fight it out in a retro gaming tournament to raise money for a charity which helps put fun and inclusion into the lives of disabled people.

The event, at the Live Art Bistro on Regent Street, will see gaming enthusiasts play classic games on old-school consoles including SNES, Sega Mega Drive , X-Box, PlayStation, and more.

It will raise money for SpecialEffect, a charity which uses technology ranging from modified joypads to eye-control, to find a way for disabled people to play videogames to the very best of their abilities.

It says that be levelling the playing field, it brings together families and friends together and has a profoundly positive impact on therapy, confidence and rehabilitation.

Event organiser Kristen Armstrong said: “There have been a number of retro gaming events across the country but not many that venture up North. There’s still a huge appetite for old-school computer games and as an avid gamer I wanted to offer an event in my local community that also supported a worthwhile cause.

“I have a disability so I have a real affinity with SpecialEffect. They do exceptional work, especially with young people.

“The event is a great opportunity for fans of eighties and nineties computer games to get together.

“We’ve got a selection of great prizes available too including vouchers for Leeds Lazer and a meal for two at Barburrito. I’m looking forward to meeting fellow gamers there.”

The event starts at 5pm on Saturday February 10. Entry is free but includes an optional donation to SpecialEffect.
